A Harbin citizen walks in thick smog that has reduced visibility below 50 meters on October 21

Thick smog in Harbin urban areas has caused the closing of primary and secondary schools and expressways. The PM2.5 index has exceeded the maximum range of the metre.

After the serious smog on October 20, and the early morning on October 21, air pollution was even worse. The visibility in urban areas was less than 50 metres. Some major expressways in Heilongjiang Province have been closed.

Liaoning Province issued a red warning signal for thick smog, closed expressways and had many flight delays at Shenyang Airport.

In Shenyang, thick smog began to intensify in the early morning of October 21 and had not lifted at noon. Visibility was poor outdoor.

Liaoning Provincial Observatory said that it had issued ten warnings on the smog over the past two days and that it expected the smog would not lift until tomorrow morning.

Thick smog has reigned in Jilin Province since the evening of October 20 and deteriorated instead of lifting. At 2:45 am, October 21, Changchun Observatory issued a red smog warning signal, the top warning signal. All traffic, including expressway, train and airways in the province, have been affected.

The smog was so thick in Changchun at 6:00 am October 21 that one almost could not see his fingers when he stretched his hand before himself. All the vehicles had to switch on their flashing lights and drive slowly. Due to the pungent smell of the smog, most of the citizens and the traffic police outdoors had to wear masks.

Quite a few expressways were closed and there were 14 road accidents from the evening of October 20 to the morning the next day.
