Originating from Toronto, Canada, the SlutWalk movement has quickly become an awakening with 80 walks all over the world from London to Calcutta to Chicago and, more recently, Hong Kong.

The SlutWalk movement was born in April 2011 when a Canadian police officer made a statement that “women should avoid dressing like sluts in order to not be victimised.” This prompted the movement to end slut shaming, sexual profiling and victim blaming. It was founded by people in their own cities who felt they needed to speak up for those blamed for actions they didn’t not cause or encourage.

The term “slut” originally meant “untidy women” but slowly it changed to become a gender assassination, a sexual suppression. This is a term thrown by men to label women that were promiscuous or wore revealing attire, but where is the male equivalent to the word? -It doesn’t exist.

Hong Kong’s Secretary for Security Lai Tung-Kwok said “Women should not drink too much to avoid rape” He received a plethora of backlash.

SLUTWALK FACTS:
