The following is based on translations from Chinese media:
So far there has been no news about Chinese nuclear submarine cruising near the US. There has been official confirmation from China that a Chinese nuclear submarine operated in the Indian Ocean for a short period of time.
US nuclear submarine commander Benjamin Person (transliteration from Chinese) recently laughed at China, saying that Chinese nuclear submarines had never been active near the United States. He is happy that his nuclear submarine has been active in the seas near China for a long time.
This qianzhan.com article comments on Person’s words, saying that China obviously lags behind the US, but it has been making great efforts to catch up. China has established a coastal anti-submarine network and improved and upgraded the equipment of its anti-submarine aircraft and warships.
Such efforts will soon effectively deter the activities of US nuclear submarines in the East China Sea but not the South China Sea as the latter is vast in area and complicated under water. However China’s reclamation in key areas in the South China Sea will enable China to set up naval and air bases for anti-submarine aircrafts and warships to contain US nuclear submarines. Therefore, the article believes that US nuclear submarines will not be able to cruise freely in the East and South China Seas for much longer.
The article says that when China’s new nuclear submarines have been commissioned and communication technology improved, Chinese nuclear submarines will be able to operate near the US.
Contributor’s note: My post in early August mentioned Japanese Yumiuri Shimbun’s report that a nuclear submarine of the Chinese navy successfully launched a new-type JL-3 submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) in the Atlantic Ocean in late July. The missile hit its target in a desert in Xinjiang. That test proves that China’s strategic nuclear submarine can hit anywhere in the United States with its JL-3 SLBMs. Therefore, I believe it is not necessary for a Chinese strategic nuclear submarines to cruise near the US to make American people nervous.
On the other hand, what the qianzhan.com article says about keeping US attack nuclear submarines away from East and South China Seas is in fact senseless. As most major Chinese cities are located near Chinese coast, US attack nuclear submarines can hit those cities with their Tomahawk cruise missiles even if they are not in the seas near China. The missile has a range of 2,800 km. Chinese coast cities remain vulnerable to US attack even if US submarines are not in the East or South China Sea.
China has to make hard efforts to obtain the capabilities of fighting its enemy far away from its coasts to avoid damages to its homeland. That is the common views of Chinese generals.

A few years ago there was a missile launched in the Pacific Ocean, witnessed by folks on the beach.
It wasn’t our missile, it was someone else’s missile. Not a missile shot by Russia, Iraq, nor Iran.
Had on its side, MADE IN CHINA.

The significance of that launch, and the launch location, is that an interceptor missile would never be able to catch it, and thus Chinese SLBMs can bypass our existing missile defense systems.

China’s recent activities never fail to amaze me. For a country whose very economy is so dependent on exports to the world, their inferiority complex continues to drive them to ever increasing numbers of stupid moves on the world stage. The South China Sea, incursions into Japanese and Philippine airspace, buzzing US Reconnaissance aircraft, and now announcing they will place a submarine off the US shores. With these and other moves, they have succeeded in alienating a large part of the world and forced nations like Japan, the Philippines, India, and others to consider drastic moves as to their own security. Hell, Japan, recipient of the only nuclear attacks in the history of the world is seriously contemplating (or silently already under way) becoming a nuclear power. China is like the frail kid on the playground who all of a sudden grows up and achieves stronger height an weight and decides to become a bully. He may be bigger, he may be taller, but he isn’t necessarily smarter or tougher. And when he confronts the wrong person, he gets bloodied, and in a hurry. That is the game China is playing right now. Continue the confrontations with the Japanese, India, and yes even the US and they may find that their large army, their submarines, and their fledgling Blue Water Navy were built for the sole purpose to be destroyed. The sad matter of fact then would be that the irresponsible, irrational, and ill-prepared leadership might resort to Nuclear Weapons to prove the legitimacy of “China Rising”. And with that all the exports, all the world-wide agreements for natural resources, and all the prestige they think they have or have sought in the world will be for naught. And what will be left behind will not be the massive factories, or the shining new cities filled with a burgeoning middle class, but devastation and the destruction of the Chines Miracle, but rather 100’s of millions of Chinese who might survive, mired in sickness, starvation, and a lifestyle reminiscent of 10th century China. China has said it wants to be a world power. Well China, start acting like one and quit trying to prove your the toughest kid on the block when in reality, you are just a wannabe!.

I agree we have been way too distracted by the Indian Ocean and its gulfs and seas. It has never been as crucial to American interests as the the Atlantic and Pacific. It is the only ocean in which an indigenous trading network existed prior to Western expansion. The five hundred year period from the Portuguese intrusion until now was a historical anomaly.
The USA must be supreme on the World’s Ocean in which we are in essence a great isle. With a US-Indian alliance a fleet-in-being can include Australian, Israeli, Egyptian, Kenyan, Indonesian, Malayan and other friendly nations on the Indian Ocean littoral. But we must let all potential allows know, that the Indian Ocean laps up on no American shores.

Well, while we have been spending our time and money on “wars”, we have had to scrap our space shuttle and hitch a ride with the Russians. Now India is planning to orbit Mars and don’t tell me the Indian Institute of Technology is only a hick school – the are rated very highly. Maybe we need to refocus and change our priorities!

You can blame the Shuttle rides on this administration for limiting and cutting NASA budget.
All the money spent on wars gives and advantage of equipment, tactical know-how and ability to deal with any world uprisings at a moment notice. We stand to gain from those wars technologically and tactically.
Our priority at any given time should be;
-Are we strong and stable enough to deter attacks?
-Is our military up to the challenge of a full on attack against the mainland USA?
-Do we have the proper people in place to co-ordinate a defense as well as an offense?
In these global times of trouble, this is not the time to be WEAK and wondering!

US military is superior than China globally but not in Asia. A balance of military power between China and US in Asia contributes to stability in this region. The Chinese have been operating a covert weapons development program for years. Having built a new facility beneath the village of Bin Wa, the aim of this program is the construction of a missile with a range of 5,500 miles. The prototype, tested in 2010, was nicknamed Thundering Pole and suffered a catastrophic explosion from SLRK facility in the Indian Ocean. Design alterations followed quickly with the subsequent testing of: Spitting Cobra, Trouser Weasel, and the Panda Poker. The program has, however, failed to achieve objectives because the rockets are too small.

Obama and Bush helped build China’s military, all in return for China buying our Treasury bills. All Obama wanted from China was a few fig leaf steps to stop global warming, as China emitted more carbons than the rest of the world combined. Bush liked commercial trade with China, helping put us in debt forever to the Chinese, as they buy up property in the US. China can keep its people as subjugated as in North Korea, siphoning off money for the military, unlike America where we have political limits and get “war weary.”
The only good thing about China is they oppose Muslims. Russia and China have Muslim insurrections, yet Russia is friends with Shiites, and China with Pakistan and Afghanistan. North Korea sends nuke parts to Iran. When oil and money are involved, China, Russia and North Korea are the Muslims’ friends.
Best about China is it helps North Korea counterfeit our hundred dollar bills, so well, experts have trouble distinguishing them. This way America helps Kim Jong Un build nuclear bombs, with our counterfeit money. Ben Bernanke said not to worry, it’s just a few billion worth. Ben gave us the 2008 recession, so we can just Ben. China takes its cut, as North Korea passes out fake Ben Franklins. Ben Bernanke is asking North Korea to put his picture in place of Franklin. We could call the 100 dollar notes, “Ben Bernankes” but Kim Jong Un would be jealous. A Chinese bank in China near North Korea helps print the Ben Bernankes.

Tragically, in comparison, we have a grossly underutilized defense against Chinese nukes that could seriously mitigate their lethality here, that few know about, much less appreciate.
We could instantly render all Chinese nukes threatening us (Russian, N Korean, Iranian and any terrorist nukes, too.) 90% less lethal, quick as the public is instructed again in the basics of Civil Defense ‘blast & fallout’ survival tactics. But on the bright side, their military is riddled with the same Chinese apcray we have to throw away because it’s inferior to the product it replaced, or mislabeled, or counterfeit, or just plain lousy.
I’ve seen Chinese stainless steel rust. But it’s cheap.
And things break when stressed like in war, and aggressive defensive maneuvers. Ask the Russians. But they didn’t have the ability to steal our technology.
But they can’t steal quality.
