The following is based on a translation of a report on a Chinese news site:

Shanghai plans to make a breakthrough in key deep sea submersible, surveying and exploration technologies by 2020.

It is now building a 5000-ton scientific survey master ship, the Zhangqian, and will put it into operation in 2016.

It has completed research and development for a 10,000-metre unmanned submersible and landing vehicle and will test them at a depth of 4,000 metres.

The unmanned submersible is planned to submerge into the deepest part of the world’s oceans, the Mariana Trench, in 2016.

The manned Caihongyu submersible, now being developed, is planned to go to the bottom of the Trench in 2019.

The success of Shanghai’s deep submersible Caihongyu project will enable Shanghai to develop a 100-billion-yuan deep-sea equipment industry to boost Shanghai’s marine industries and make them account for 30% of regional output value.

This is an unusual story. I struggle to believe it. What about global competition?
