  • 1870 – A state flag of South Australia is adopted.
  • 1938 – The Australian National War Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France is opened.
  • 1983 – Aviator and businessman Dick Smith (pictured) completes the first solo round the world helicopter flight.
