  • 1773 – Sir Thomas Makdougall Brisbane, namesake of Brisbane, is born.
  • 1916 – Arthur Seaforth Blackburn and John Leak awarded the Victoria Cross for their separate actions at the Battle of Pozières.
  • 1938 – Bert Newton (pictured), award-winning media personality, is born.
