  • 1900 – Neville Howse rescues a fallen ally under heavy fire during the Second Boer War, becoming the first Australian recipient of the Victoria Cross.
  • 1983 – Golf champion Jack Newton (pictured) loses his right arm when he walks into a plane’s spinning propeller.
