- 1964 – Donald Campbell (pictured) set a record of 403.10 mph for jet propelled four-wheeled vehicles (Class A) on Lake Eyre.
- 2014 – Malaysian Airlines Flight 17 was shot down by Russian-controlled forces over Ukraine killing all 298 on board, including 27 Australians.
