- 1902 – Indigenous Australian artist Albert Namatjira (pictured) is born near Alice Springs.
- 1909 – The last sighting of the steamer Waratah sailing from Australia; disappeared off the coast of South Africa with 211 passengers and crew. The most famous ship to go down until the Titanic three years later.
- 1983 – New South Wales premier Neville Wran is exonerated by the Street Royal Commission over claims that he attempted to influence the NSW majesty.
